Great Lines from AllWorld Sessions at Global Summit on Entrepreneurship

Here are some of the great lines I took away from the AllWorld Sessions on December 4 on Visibility, Talent and Social Media.

I moderated two panels, 1st on Visibility and 3d on Social Media, and have fewer notes since I was in the conversation.  Here are some of the great lines I took away.

Visibility & Values
Pakistan is an “India” waiting to happen.
In India, the entrepreneurial culture reshaped government.
We look for values as much as valuation (from one of the investment firms).
Go out of your comfort zone to access values and ethics.
Why are we focusing on government problems?  We don’t ask permission from government, and we don’t complain.
We get on with it.
There was an overall feeling in this discussion that values will drive company value and lead to innovation, and that the emphasis on values is what this new breed of entrepreneurs is bringing.

Talent for Growth
HR is a business function – it is where you make your money.
People are attracted to start ups for the speed and diversity of the job.  For many employees, far greater then compensation is creating a fun atmosphere (someone in the audience referenced the purchase of a ping pong table as one of their best investments).
We obsess about empowering others on our team.
I think about how I wanted to be treated as an employee.  I focus on making the team feel valued.
We don’t need aid, we need market access.
I know I have done my job right as a CEO when there is a group around me driving me to be better.
The region is sitting on a ticking time bomb. The next 10 years, 100 million people are coming on line looking for jobs.
We remove people who are “stupid and stubborn” as quickly as possible.

Social Media
Social media is about a two-way conversation.  You have to let your customers speak.
People will complain on social media, and you can learn form the issues they raise and create customer loyalty by how you respond to them.
Once you go live with social media, you have to have someone dedicated to responding.
SMS is a powerful business platform, especially in countries with limited computer access.
There is no information security.
The first place future employees are going to check you out is on facebook.
